Starting school is a big step, and the issue of Summer babies not being ready when they have just turned 4 has always been a popular topic for debate. Parents do have the option to defer their child's start date but this could mean starting school a year later and going straight into Year 1.
Rosie Dutton is Mum to Olivia, who was born in August. After deferring Olivia's start date she was told she would join the school in Year 1, a decision that Rosie was not happy with. Staffordshire County Council accepted her appeal, despite there being no 'exceptional circumstances', in a landmark desison that could pave the way for many more parents requesting to defer their child's school start date.
